Red Cross message – blood shortage nationwide and in Prince William County

Blood and blood platelets of all blood types are urgently needed.  Donations through the Red Cross were down about 10 percent in June, resulting in 50,000 fewer donations than expected.  July 4th falling mid-week reduced the number of blood drives at the beginning of July.  Many sponsors, especially businesses, were unable to host blood drives because their employees took extended vacations.  All this caused a critical shortage and your help is needed now.
So we are asking those in our community throughout Prince William County to please give blood, if you are eligible, and encourage family, friends and colleagues to do the same.  It would be especially helpful for the business community to promote this need to company employees.
Almost 17,000 pints of blood must be collected every day for patients in nearly 3,000 hospitals and transfusion centers around the nation.  To make an appointment for a blood donation and to schedule blood drives for later this summer, call 1-800-RED CROSS or visit www.redcrossblood.org.  Or, individuals can simply walk in to our regional blood donation center in Fairfax and donate every day except Tuesdays and Sundays – see attachment here…Community Hero Flyer
