Members of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors are going on a walk this Memorial Day, a very long walk. On Mon., May 27, 2013, Pete Candland, Gainesville, Va. district supervisor will begin an all-day hike, called Walk for Prince William, to help raise $30,000 for various local non-profits. Occoquan Supervisor, Mike May, will join in the initial segment of the walk, and representatives of the participating non-profits have been invited to walk all or part of the 30-mile route. From the Hilda Barg Homeless Prevention Center at 14945 Jefferson Davis Highway in Woodbridge, Va., to the Haymarket, Va. Town Hall at 15000 Washington Street, the 30-mile walk will begin at 6 a.m. and is expected to end at approximately 6 p.m. The event is raising money for several community non-profits, including: Azalea Charities, SERVE, ACTS, Hilda Barg Homeless Prevention Center, Officer Chris Yung Fund, Youth Apostles Institute-Don Bosco Center and Lance Cpl. Donations are accepted on-line by going to https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/walkforprincewilliam and donors will be able to choose which organization that they would like to donate to, or they can donate to the general fund, in which the monies collected will be evenly distributed to the participating non-profits. Rise Up Prince William hopes to raise $30, 000 for Walk for Prince William, or $1000 per mile.
Walk for Prince William is the first annual walk, sponsored by Rise Up Prince William and Azalea Charities. Partnering community non-profit representatives are also invited to join the Prince William Walk. The 30-mile trek will have the following rest stops at every five mile point along the route: McCoart Government Building, Don Bosco Center, the SERVE campus and the Prince William County Police Department, Western District.
“Prince William County is a large, diverse county, but what brings us together is our communities and the desire to make Prince William a better place to live for all, especially for those who are in need ,” said Pete Candland, Prince William County board of supervisors for the Gainesville, Va. district. “Walk for Prince William is about helping and giving back to our community, and my colleagues and I are up for the 30-mile challenge, getting a new perspective of the county we serve,” said Candland.
