Celebration on Voter Registration Day, September 26th
Local nonprofit organizations: HOLA (Hispanic Organization for Leadership & Action) and LWV (League of Women Voters® Of The Prince William Area), AKA (Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc), and NOVA (Northern Virginia Community College), holding the screening “Democracy for Sale” at NOVA Woodbridge campus (2645 College Dr, Woodbridge, VA 22191). It is a project between VCET (Virginia Civic Engagement Table) and Working Films.
Two activities during this celebration
o Movie: “Democracy for Sale”, two sessions at 4:00 and at 7:00 pm. (After both screening, panel discussion)
Features NC native and comedian Zach Galifianakis and focuses on how big money political interests have led to a lack of environmental protection in North Carolina along with tax cuts for the upper class and corporations, education cuts, gerrymandering, and laws designed to decrease voter turnout.
o Voter Registration opportunity
(12:00 pm to 7:00 pm)
o 12:00 pm -3:00 pm at cafeteria area WS building
o 3:00-7:00 pm at Atrium close to the theater.
A border and barbeque aren’t the only things Virginia and North Carolina have in common. The two states also share some of the most gerrymandered districts in the country, cozy relationships between regulators and industry, and politicians that care more about serving their donors than their constituents.
Join us on September 24th, at NOVA Woodbridge campus, for a free screening of Democracy for Sale to learn more about North Carolina politics and it’s innumerable parallels to our state and what we can do to fight back.
If you are not registered to vote, take advantage of this opportunity!
