Community Foundation’s Environment Fund Reaches $1 Million for Northern Virginia’s Natural Resources

Fairfax, VA (September 3, 2024) – Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, the Community
Foundation for Northern Virginia’s Environment Fund reached a $1 million endowment milestone last
month. This is the first issue area focused fund at the Community Foundation to reach this mark.

Since 2018 inception, the Environment Fund has granted nearly $400,000 to organizations whose work aligns with the Fund’s mission: to protect, restore and improve the natural environment of Northern Virginia, thereby enhancing the health and quality of life of its citizens and the economy of the region. Past recipients include EcoAction Arlington, Fairfax County Public Schools, NOVA Outside, and more.

The permanency and solidity of endowments ensure amplifying impact. As the Environment Fund Endowment grows, grants to nonprofit organizations will increase in size. For example, in 2018 the Community Foundation awarded $25,000 from the Fund and in 2024, nonprofits received $95,000. As permanent community capital, the Environment Fund will forever impact Northern Virginia communities.

The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia is ready to partner with more organizations in
January 2025. Applications will be accepted from 501(c)(3) nonprofits that offer educational programming focused on conservation, energy efficiency, sustainability, watershed management, and workforce-climate management.
