FBLA Speed Networking connects business leaders with local students to teach them the soft networking skills that are essential in today’s workplace. The Education & Innovation Committee of the Prince William Chamber works with a different local Future Business Leaders of America or DECA club each year to plan the event. After some initial guidance from committee members, the students take on the majority of planning, putting together a schedule, marketing materials and even securing sponsors. This planning process itself becomes a valuable learning experience for the students.

During the Speed Networking sessions, students will rotate every few minutes, meeting dozens of Chamber members and other community leaders in a matter of hours. This format helps to break the ice and ensure that the students have many opportunities to practice networking skills and ask questions. The adult volunteers share advice on professional basics, such as making a good first impression, dressing for success and preparing a 30-second elevator speech. Previous volunteers describe the event as a rewarding way to give back to the community and enhance tomorrow’s workforce.
