Local Giving Gains National Attention for Manassas Coffee Shop
Giving back to the local community is gaining Jirani Coffeehouse national attention, with USA Today featuring the shop in a recent article, “A Winning Formula: When Small Businesses Give Back.” Since opening its doors in downtown Manassas, Jirani has quickly established itself as a neighborhood hub—opening early to serve commuters, offering shared work spaces, showcasing artists, hosting community groups and donating food to the homeless.
This buzz of activity is all part of co-owners Ken and Detra Moorman’s vision to serve as a neighborhood hub and altruistic part of the community.
“For me, it’s about how we contribute to the place we live, work and play in. How do we make it better through giving back and helping others,” Ken Moorman told USA Today, “Ultimately, that’s what it’s about.”
Jirani, which means “neighbor” or “neighborhood” in Swahili, is currently hosting a summer reading program to help prevent learning loss during the break from school. Held in partnership with with Mahogany Books and Light of Life Church, the program offers prizes for students who read at least five books and submit their reading log by August 23.
Upcoming events at Jirani include the return of the Moore Laughter Clean Comedy Show on July 14 and 15, featuring comedy without vulgarity or cursing.
